Okutama
Okutama is a town located in the far West of Tokyo prefecture. At roughly 60km (37miles) West of the Imperial Palace (central Tokyo area), it is far from what one would picture as “Tokyo”. With mountains, beautiful crystal clear rivers, and so many trees!
About an hour and a half on the train from the metropolitan area, this green paradise is the perfect day trip get-away for anyone looking to escape the city.
The town of Okutama is both the most Western and most Northern part of Tokyo prefecture.
Getting There
To get there, please take Chūō-Sōbu Line rapid service to Ōme. Then take the Ōme Line to Okutama.
The Chūō-Sōbu Line rapid service stops at most major stations within the metropolitan area, including Tokyo and Shinjuku.
The Ōme Line to Okutama is now nicknamed the Tokyo Adventure Line!

Activities in Okutama
A destination for hiking, kayaking, caving, onsen, and general enjoyment of nature, there are many exciting things to do in Okutama.
Upon arriving at Okutama station, walk out of the main entrance and you can see the Tourist Information Centre to your left. In here you will find leaflets, maps and friendly staff able to advise and guide you through planning your day!
Top Tip: If you plan on visiting a paid for attraction, such as the amazing Nippara Limestone Caves, the tourist information centre can provide discount ticket coupons! So be sure to stop by before starting your day!
Ohtama Walking Trail
The main purpose of our visit to Okutama was to walk the Ohtama Walking Trail. An 8.2km hike along the river, through the ravine, into a dense woodland, with many beautiful and interesting spots along the way. Starting at Okutama Station and ending at Kori Station.
You can download the Ohtama Walking Trail map with the link below!

The Perfect Day!
A day trip to Okutama is my personal recommendation for the perfect way to escape the city and enjoy nature. It’s almost impossible to believe that such a place exists in Tokyo, you just have to see and experience it for yourself!
There are a few small hotels and ryokans in Okutama if you wish to stay a night or two. We only went for the day, but will be returning again soon!
I cannot wait to return and see these places and how the colours change, in the Autumn.
