Sunshine Aquarium – Ikebukuro, Tokyo

Sunshine Aquarium

Sunshine Aquarium

A ten minute walk from Ikebukuro Station, high up on the top floors and rooftop of the World Import Mart building, Sunshine City, exists Sunshine Aquarium. An aquarium featuring over 750 different species of fish, sharks, amphibians, crustaceans, penguins, otters, seals and sea lions.

Nearly 40,000 individual fish across 70 or so tanks with a total water volume of 770,000 litres, it is a truly amazing place to visit. The various tanks are beautifully designed to showcase so many interesting species of marine wildlife.

Walking around the Sunshine Aquarium, it would be hard not to be impressed at the marvel that is a mind bending volume of water at the top of a relatively tall building.

Admission fee for the visit was ¥2,700. There is no time limit, so if you do visit please take your time and enjoy all the amazing creatures on display.

The specimens all seemed to be in good health and well cared for. Sunshine Aquarium has a successful focus on breeding large fish such as shark rays, and sunfish.

The first permanent reproduction of a coral reef in Japan, Sunshine Coral Reef, is on display and definitely worth a look.

I did not take my DSLR camera on the day, but I did take a few snaps with my iPhone, so please enjoy them!
