Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum

In 1993 the Tokyo Metropolitan Government established the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum with a purpose of relocating and reconstructing historically and culturally significant buildings which faced complications or impossibilities in preservation at their original locations.
The museum features buildings from various periods in Japanese history, such as Edo period, Meiji period, Taishō period and as recent as the early Shōwa period.

With a mixture of traditional Japanese architecture as well as some Western inspired buildings, both residential and commercial. The museum seeks to recreate an experience of an older time.

Visitors are welcome to walk the “streets”, enter into the various residential buildings and explore the shops, all of which have been fully reconstructed and decorated to offer a diorama of how life used to be.

The museum also features vehicles such as an old bus and a 1960’s street car.

The museum is located within Koganei Park which is easily accessible via the Chuo line to Musashi-Koganei station, or the Seibu Shinjuku line to Hana-Koganei.
